BIRA is a not-for-profit association of restaurants and affiliated businesses whose mission is to promote, cooperatively support and unify the Bloomington area’s unique dining establishments.  Established in 1995,  a small group of  restaurant owners wanted to show the world that the quality of their offerings was commensurate with the quality of life in our unique, diverse home town of Bloomington, Indiana.

The symbol of our Association is interlaced with the historical icon of our community- Charlie sits atop the Monroe County Courthouse as a copper plated weathervane recognized by generations of Bloomingtonians.  This icon was forged by Austin Seward in 1826 and has occupied the cupola of 3 Courthouses.  Symbolic of our independence and the unofficial icon of Bloomington, Charlie’s view of the world is best summed up by an unidentified lady in the 1940’s:  “The weathervane fish doesn’t always point into the wind… oh, but that reminds me of the people of Bloomington.”
