Congratulations! Bloomington made the list!

livability-top-10-foodie-cities
Bloomington has been named one of the Top 10 Foodie Cities by Livability.com, a national website that ranks quality of life and travel amenities of America’s small and mid-sized cities.

The list is the second installment of an annual listing of America’s top foodie cities and features communities with a high ratio of acclaimed restaurants, innovative chefs and strong regional culinary styles to their population size. To narrow down the list, Livability.com editors considered the size of the city (populations under 250,000) and the city’s overall quality of life.

INVIGORATING RESTAURANT SCENE

Bloomington was chosen because it has an invigorating restaurant scene, a wealth of chefs adapting traditional dishes into edible art, and a restaurant community that supports local farmers and food producers. Read more here.

Uptown Cafe

The Uptown Cafe

Every month BIRA provides a peek behind the scenes as it showcases a specific member and what’s behind their establishment’s success.  This month we are proud to present Michael’s Uptown Cafe located on Kirkwood Avenue.

Review by Lynn Schwartzberg-

The Uptown Cafe began as a small casual cafe on North Walnut Street in 1976.  The restaurant served big breakfasts that were some of the best in town.  Owner Michael Cassady, then in his mid-twenties, and the Uptown have certainly matured over the years.

Serving breakfast, lunch and dinner, the Uptown has become a Bloomington mainstay.  Still serving famous breakfasts and casual lunches, the Uptown also serves a full dinner menu.

In the evenings, the Uptown is transformed from a casual, fast paced cafe to a more elegant dining roon with linens and candles at every table.  The dining room, decorated with season flowers is filled with diners feasting on classic American fare prepared with close attention to every detail.  Nightly specials may include Chicken Marsala, Crispy Glazed Duck Breast with wild mushroon bread pudding or expertly prepared seafood.  Portions are generous and beautifully plated, a feast for both the eyes and the taste buds.  A well rounded selection of first courses includes kyuuri tuna, seared and served with house made pickled vegetables, classic house pate and fried rock shrimp and calamari served with two delightful sauces.   The details really make the difference at the Uptown.  Salads are served on well chilled plates, entrees on heated ones.  The staff is well versed on the wine list and can make excellent recommendations for pairings.

The Uptown Cafe

new bar added in April

The long anticipated opening of the new bar area on April 13  falls nothing short of the expected. Complete with Brazilian cherry bar, the attention to quality and detail is the calling card of the Uptown Cafe.

The Uptown has truly matured into one of Bloomington’s finest go-to restaurants for fine dining in the evening. while still keeping it’s comfortable and casual appeal.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind.—Urbanspoon has named Yogi’s Grill & Bar one of the most
popular restaurant bars in the United States based on coverage and reviews from
professional food critics, bloggers, the Urbanspoon community, and diners.

“Many people don’t think of the food when thinking about bars, but the Urbanspoon
community does!” said Patrick O’Donnell, Urbanspoon. “Whether you are on the hunt for
a craft cocktail inspired by the Saint Patrick’s Day or some good food to eat with a pint of
beer from a local sports bar for March Madness, this list includes 200 bar options
nationwide.”

Urbanspoon, a mobile restaurant discovery application and reservation management
system, examined the reviews and coverage of more than 7,500 U.S. restaurants with bars
to determine the top 200 restaurant bars in 101 cities and 33 states.

The restaurant bars were required to receive an 85 percent or more “like” reviews, with
the top-rated restaurants receiving the most positive user reviews, blog posts, up votes,
down votes, and page views.

“We are honored to be recognized by Urbanspoon as one of the nation’s best restaurant
bars,” said Chris Karl, of Yogi’s Grill & Bar. “We have made significant investments in
our restaurant. This award affirms our innovation, hard work, and dedication to
continuous improvement.”

Some of the features awarded by the Urbanspoon community include restaurant bars with
10 or more European or craft beers on tap. Yogi’s has over 50 of the best beers on tap at
any one time.

Yogi’s is the only restaurant bar in Bloomington to receive the honor and one of only
four recognized in Indiana. Other Hoosier honorees were The Local Eatery and Pub,
BRU Burger Bar and St. Elmo Steak House in Indianapolis.
